The end of the party

Suddenly in the dumb evening I saw light;
I found a refuge in love.

At the end of the party,
silent as a thief,
Loneliness creeped back,
sunk her anchor into me:
calm, malignant, sucking,
smiling her irony -
you, belong to me.

From the agony of separation
my heart turned white as vapor-cloud.
From grief
        that descended upon me
like an evil angel
I observe the staggering immensity
of the experience.
From within the process of galloping decay
I cast a last fading glance toward
past-fertility.

It was so decreed
That
  I remain
a slave
to love.
